Four people were killed and 35 others seriously injured after a chimney collapsed at a brick kiln in Basirhat in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district. The officers provided this information.
A local police officer said that the incident took place on Wednesday night when the workers of the said factory were trying to light a fire in the chimney, which was closed for a long time. While two people died on the spot in the accident, the third person died on Thursday morning.
The injured are currently undergoing treatment in the local hospital. Local police officer said that the condition of five of the injured is very serious.
The initial rescue work was started by the local people. Police from local police stations and rescue teams from the state government reached the spot. The rescue work continued till Thursday morning.
Only two of the three dead workers have been identified. One of them is local resident Hafeezul Mandal (34), while the other is Rakesh Kumar (39), a resident of Uttar Pradesh, who came to West Bengal to work as a migrant worker. The third laborer killed in the accident has not been identified yet.
Police has started the investigation of the matter. The investigation primarily pertains to whether there were lapses in the maintenance of chimneys and other critical installations at the brick kiln.
Local people have been complaining that many brick kilns are running illegally in the area, where minimum safety measures have not been adopted for the workers.
